Marie Curie of course being the one to discover radioactivity with her husband Pierre. Not knowing what we know now, they were unprotected and Marie died of Leukemia. Pierre would likely have suffered a similar fate but he was run over by a carriage. Regular household items like cookbooks are so radioactive that they can only be handled by people wearing radiation suits.
